Yoga Storytime

This week I hosted my first Yoga Storytime at my public library.

Intro:

I introduced myself and had participants do the same. We started by shaking our sillies out to music.

Song: “Shake Your Sillies Out” by Raffi from More Singable Songs

Breathing Technique:

Had everyone seat in a comfortable position. Explained what inhale and exhale mean by using the flower and candle light technique. Use one hand to hold the imaginary flower, use the other hand to hold the imaginary candle.

Inhale: smell the flower

Exhale: blow out the candle light

Book:

Dinos Don’t Do Yoga by Catherine Bailey, illustrated by Alex Willmore

(Personal Book Review: Rex is not happy when Sam shows up to his valley. Rex is all about roaring and being tough, while Sam is all about doing yoga. Rex is set on making sure no one joins Sam, but little by little all his friends start doing yoga. Plot twist, the reason why Rex “hates” yoga is because he thinks he can’t do it. Perfect book to teach kids that anyone can do yoga. I along with most of my participants give this book a thumbs up!)

Yoga Practice:

Once the book was done I brought everyone back with the butterfly pose and simple spinal twists (while reminding them to inhale and exhale).

I then moved everyone to three sun salutations. During the salutations we spent more time doing the planks (mentioned previously on the book).

Simple Sun Salutation: Inhale hands up, touch the sky. Exhale hands down, touch your toes. Hands on the ground, move your feet back for plank. Belly on the ground, hands under shoulder for snake pose. Downward dog; half fold and repeat.

After the salutations everyone was moved to Savasana and had them focus on their breathing while listening to a soft song.

Ended the session by doing the flower and candle light breathing technique once more. Made library announcements and thanked everyone for their participation.

Savasana Song:

“Here Comes the Sun” by Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of the Beatles

What did people say?

“Thank you so much for offering this, it’s pretty neat.”
